10 Steps for Writing and Publishing in 2023

New Year’s Eve parties are a faded memory and February blew away so quickly I cannot believe it is already March 2023. With Spring around the corner, and medical issues a recent memory, I am back to writing full time. As my North Carolina birds start filling the nesting boxes and the daffodils fade, I want to share some insight into what I call ‘Getting your Butt in the Chair’.

A new year means different things to writers. Will you finally sit down and finish that book started during NaNoWriMo last November 2022? Or, do you have edits due back to your publisher for that book you sold at a writer’s conference? Do you have a book coming out in 2023 that you finally got around to finishing like I did? (The Rogue’s Ring will be released May 12, 2023)  Better get that calendar out and plan your promotion strategy.

In-person workshops have reopened. If you are as tired as I am of only attending Zoom meetings, you will find meeting other writers in person will be a real treat. However, in-person workshops and many on-line workshops require money, so have you made your budget for the new year?

Writing is fun, but we must not lose sight of the business aspect. This is where Romance Writers of America and the Fantasy-Futuristic & Paranormal Romance Writers can help. Membership will give writers a chance to communicate with other writers, both aspiring and multi-published. As a member of both groups, I am today sharing my 10 steps that you, as a writer, must consider to make a book a success.

  1. Finish the book!
  2. Finish those edits.
  3. Start your promotion calendar.
  4. Replace the paper you shredded or the thumb-drives you filled.
  5. Plan to take a workshop. A writer always has more to learn.
  6. Create a budget to go toward promoting your book.
  7. Create or pay someone to craft an eye-opening book cover.
  8. Whenever the opportunity comes, write or present craft tips to help others.
  9. Publish your book and share release day news.
  10. ENJOY WRITING THE NEXT BOOK!

They raised two handsome sons in Rumney, New Hampshire while she dreamed of being a writer. When the children had left the nest, and shoveling snow became a chore, she retired from her satisfying job as a 911 Emergency Medical Dispatcher and moved to North Carolina, where she writes full-time. Nancy is a member of Romance Writers of America, Heart of Carolina Romance Writers, Fantasy-Futuristic & Paranormal Romance Writers, and the Triangle Association of Freelancers.
