Anthology Interview with JJ Graham

Black and white image of a man wearing a dark sweater and looking at the cameraJJ Graham writes “spooky gay romance”—basically MM Romance with plenty of paranormal thrown in. When he’s not writing, I’m curled up on the couch watching Doctor Who with my husband or practicing yoga.

JJ’s short story, “And the Wolves Howled Again,” will appear in the upcoming FF & P anthology, Secrets We Keep. The anthology will be released on October 22, 2024.

Summarize your story in 75 words or less.

Marcus Kingsley retired from bounty hunting with one rule: don’t get attached. After all, he’s at the end of his lifespan as a gargoyle. So, when a vampire offers him a huge sum of money to retrieve a relic from consecrated ground, Marcus refuses. But the vamp’s valet, a gorgeous werewolf, gets under Marcus’s skin and he accepts. Marcus has a feeling the werewolf knows much more about the relic than he lets on.

What’s a favorite part of your story?

I loved writing the scene where Marcus and Bash finally meet to talk about the contract in New Orleans’ French Quarter. They talk around each other and flirt in this really old bar while it’s closed for an hour to the public—they’re in this safe, quiet place while there’s so much turmoil outside.

What/who was the inspiration for your story?

Gargoyles definitely don’t get enough love in literature, so I wanted to turn the cliché of a squat, ugly supernatural being on its head and make Marcus this swarthy, bear-like figure instead. The words just came to me one day, and I started writing.

Name three of your favorite sci-fi or fantasy authors.

How to choose just three? TJ Klune, Kevin J Anderson, and Allie Therin.

You’re stranded on a desert island, and you can only have one book. Which book do you bring with you and why?

Dune. Every time I read it, I find something new.

Tell us about your latest release(s) and what’s coming next for you.

My latest manuscript, Till This Moment, will be on submission via my literary agent sometime soon!
