Korie Beth Brown has written all her life, but retirement combined with the pandemic fanned the passion into high gear. She lives at the edge of Los Angeles County, at the base of a mountain, with her husband and two cockatiels.
Brown’s space opera short story, “The Singer (Not the Song),” will be avilable in the FF & P Anthology, Lure of the Hunt, which releases on October 22, 2024.
Please tell our readers a bit about yourself in 50 words or less.
After thirty years as a high school English teacher, I retired in 2017. When I’m not writing, I’m instructing yoga classes at the Cancer Support Center and knitting/crocheting up a storm. I live in Southern California with my husband and cockatiels, where we search out the best coffee places.
Summarize your story in 75 words or less.
For too long, Andi has been on the run from her traumatic past. A server at a dive bar in a spaceport, she brings people “whiskey and wine” but otherwise keeps to herself – until the day that Taron, a Selkyrie from a doomed planet, walks in the door. Is it possible for Andi to face her fears in order to keep the love of her prince?
What’s a favorite part of your story?
I enjoyed writing the opening scene, where my hero wades into a bar fight to defend my heroine.
What/who was the inspiration for your story?
I’ve long loved the ‘70’s hit “Brandy” by Looking Glass and have always wanted to try and re-tell the story from her point of view.
Name three of your favorite sci-fi or fantasy authors.
Patricia McKillip, Robin McKinley, and George R.R. Martin.
If you could meet anyone, imaginary or real, in sci-fi or fantasy, who would it be and why?
Being a sucker for intelligent men that make snarky comments, I would love to spend some time chatting with Tyrion from the “Game of Thrones” books. For that matter, I’d be thrilled to do the same with actor Peter Dinklage!
You’re stranded on a desert island, and you can only have one book. Which book do you bring with you and why?
Can’t do it. Pick just one book? My head would explode.
Tell us about your latest release(s) and what’s coming next for you.
I am currently editing a contemporary romance novel, Under a Desert Moon, which began as a NaNoWriMo project. As of now, I intend to self-publish some time in 2025.
