New Board Member Interview: Haley Carter

A black and white image of a woman wearing a dark shirt. She has light hair and is wearing glasses. Please tell our readers a bit about yourself in 50 words or less.
I’m a wife and mom of seven in a neurodivergent family. In my past life, I worked as an audiologist. Now I’m far too busy for a day job! Writing is my escape. I also
enjoy hiking, singing and piano.

What is your board position? Treasurer.

Why did you choose to join the board?

I wanted to learn more about FF&P.

What are you hoping to get out of the board/chapter during your tenure?

I’d like to get to know other board and chapter members better, and learn more about how our chapter works.

Do you write full time or part-time?

I write part time, about a couple hours a day

What brought you to FF &P?

I like the genres it represents.

What genres do you write?

YA Dystopian speculative fiction, near and far future.

Are you traditional, hybrid, or indie published? Why did you go this route?

I would like to be traditionally published, but I’d consider hybrid or self-publishing. Funds are tight for me, and that is a big factor in my decision.

If you’re not published, which route do you plan on taking?

See above.

Do you have any odd/strange/fascinating rejection stories to share?

Not yet!

What is your writing routine like?

Most days I go to the public library in the morning to get away from the distraction of my home office. Then I’ll work at home through the afternoon.

Name three of your favorite sci-fi or fantasy authors.

I love S.J. Sincaid’s Diabolic series, Marie Lu’s Warcross series, and Biana Scardoni’s The Marked Series (a guilty pleasure of mine – I love her bad boy vampire Dominic).

If you could meet anyone, imaginary or real, in sci-fi or fantasy, who would it be and why?

My Mom, she passed away in 2016. I’d give anything to see her again.

You’re stranded on a desert island, and you can only have one book. Which book do you bring with you and why?

Such an evil question…how does one only pick one book? If I can only have one, I’ll take Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Not the novel–the digital book with the information about the universe!

Tell us about your latest release(s) and what’s coming next for you.

I’ve got a three-book series I’m working on about a seventeen-year-old girl who, after returning to her family’s hometown, discovers her connection to a mysterious research institute runs deeper than she imagined. As she uncovers the truth about her family’s past and her own identity, she must navigate between new friends, potential romance, and dangerous secrets that could change everything she thought she knew about herself.
