New Member Spotlight with Barbara Lucas

Image of Barbara Lucas in front of a purple backgroundB.L. Lucas writes spicy fantasy and paranormal romance that spirits you away you to realms steeped in shadows and edged in enchantment where witchy women and haunted heroes save each other and their worlds.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

Right now full-time.

What’s the hardest part of writing?

Trusting my writing intuition. I’m an intuitive writer who has A LOT of Strategic Thinking Strengths (6 of my top 10). So I want logical evidence and certainty, but my process is more about trusting my gut.

What’s your favorite fantasy or sci-fi movie?

The Lord of the Rings films and Legend and Excalibur for fantasy, and, hmmm, the original Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner, and Alien/Aliens for SF.

Who’s your favorite fantasy or sci-fi figure?

Ergh. I struggle so hard with picking just one thing as a favorite. So you’ll get a list of current favorites. I think you want characters here, not real people: Raphael, Elena, Dmitri, Lijuan, and Naasir in the Guild Hunter series. Kaleb Krychek in the Psy-Changeling series. The Kane brothers in Brynne Weavers Ruinous Love trilogy (not F/SF, but horror romcom).

If you could meet anyone in fantasy or sci-fi who would it be?

I’m guessing this question is about real people. Definitely Nalini Singh. I adore the richness of her worlds, the depth of her characters, and the intricacies of her story arcs. Also, Mike Flannagan. I admire his writing and cinematography. There are soliloquys in all of his series that just leave me in awe.

If you could visit any fantasy or sci-fi place, where would it be?

Middle Earth. Thedas (Dragon Age video games). Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter and Psy-Changeling worlds.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever received?

The first draft is for telling yourself the story.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

That’s hard to say. Even before I started writing stories/poems, I would make them up and “play pretend” with friends where we’d be characters and build stories.

Are there specific books or authors who have influenced you as a writer?

Lots and lots of both. Nalini Singh’s series wooed me into the world of romance. Clive Barker for how he can make even the most gruesome and macabre things beautiful. Myths and legends across cultures for their sense of wonder. JRR Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and George RR Martin for building worlds rich enough that it feels like it should be real. And Stephanie Garber for her Caraval series where her language is imbued with beauty and wonder.

Give us a brief rundown of your process. Are you a plotter, a pantser, or somewhere in the middle?

I guess I’m in the middle. I’m an intuitive writer, and I need to know my characters and their story arcs, and the big story arc for the novel/series. I usually have a pretty good idea of the beginning and the end, and then I start at the first and work toward the second. I know some key scenes, but I’m discovering the rest as I go along.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey to publication?

I’ve published fantasy/horror poetry and non-fiction on fantasy/horror/SF and fandom. I participated in RWA’s Pen to Paper and Paper to Polished Programs, and those lead directly to my upcoming publications.

Tell us about your latest release and what’s coming next for you.

I have The Shadow of the Queen, a dark historical fantasy novella, coming out in THE SPIRIT OF LOVE, a Halloween-themed historical romance anthology on 9/3/24. On 10/22/24, I have Missing Pieces, a SF romance novella, coming out in THE LURE OF THE HUNT anthology the FF&P chapter is producing. Then in Q1 2025, I will be indie publishing The Touchstone, the first book in a dark romantasy, reverse harem series.
