Leah Vega lives in Southwest Idaho with her husband, daughter and Labrador retriever. She’s obsessed with all things sci-fi, music, and reading the latest bestsellers on the Amazon Sci-Fi Romance list. Her current work in progress is book nine of her ten book sci-fi romance series.
Do you write full-time or part-time?
I’d say part-time, but I put in a good chunk of hours each week.
What’s the hardest part of writing?
Self-editing is the hardest part for me. Why can’t it just be perfect the first time? lol
What’s your favorite fantasy or sci-fi movie?
Of course, the oldie but goodie Star Wars movies. The originals from the ’70s. I also love the Star Trek movies and series. Stargate movie and all the series. I love The Expanse series. I’m also enjoying the new Halo series on Paramount+
Who’s your favorite fantasy or sci-fi figure?
Princess Leia
If you could meet anyone in fantasy or sci-fi who would it be?
Princess Leia 🙂
If you could visit any fantasy or sci-fi place, where would it be?
I don’t know if it’s specifically a place but rather the ability to travel to different places in a reasonable amount of time fascinates me. I love the idea of being on a futuristic spaceship.
What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever received?
Just get it down before you lose the thoughts, then go back and edit when the time is right
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was a teenager. I didn’t start writing a novel until my 40s though.
Are there specific books or authors who have influenced you as a writer?
I really like Ella Maven who writes sci-fi romance. Her books really got me thinking about writing in that genre. If you can get past the technical errors in her writing, the universe she’s created is fascinating to me. So, I suppose I’m hooked on her universe. 🙂
Give us a brief rundown of your process. Are you a plotter, a pantser, or somewhere in the middle?
I’m in the middle. My first book, I planned each chapter with so much detail that it was exhausting. Now I make a rough outline and go from there. It’s more fun and I have more freedom to let ideas flow as they come.
Can you tell us a bit about your journey to publication?
My initial goal is to get the ten drafts of the books in my series done first. Then I plan to go back and edit, working on consistency throughout the series because (surprise) I changed my mind on things along the way. Then, I will likely self-publish, but that’s not 100% decided yet.
Tell us about your latest release and what’s coming next for you.
I keep saying my first release is “coming” but I have two more drafts to write before I begin the editing process on the series. I hope to have the drafts of the last two books done by early summer of this year. Then the daunting task of self-editing begins.
